The Lost art of Sportsmanship From Parents

Watching a youth sporting contest can bring out the best and the worst in people.  Actions at games, from fans, can range from showing no emotion, to physically assaulting another parent, coach, or referee.  Surprisingly enough these actions have occurred. For those that are relaxed in nature, watching the above unfold, can seem unimaginable.

How can a person with a short fuse, keep his/her composure, at a sporting event?  When their son isn't performing, or even playing much, their patience can fade.  When the refs are calling a bad game (as seen in their eyes), the steam can build on the inside.     And then like a volcano, they erupt, and do the unimaginable.

Unfortunately the ones hurt the most, are the youth.  Usually they are there to have fun with their friends.  The actions of their parents, speak louder than words.  When a parent misbehaves, the child represses their feelings.  In the long run, the child can become just like the parent, envious, inpatient, unforgiving, and short tempered.

In my life, I have witnessed these events occur as early as kindergarten soccer.  As a basketball referee I have seen fans behaving badly.  In one situation, a wife of a player couldn't contain herself.  She had a sharp tongue. When asked to be quiet she became offended, and after the game she got her husband involved.  The husband had to be constrained, as he tried to physically assault us. He told us that "no one ever talks to her wife like that".

Last year in a youth football game, I watched as our fans tossed vulgarities toward the refs, at the end of the game.  We had lost fair and square, but one parent became uncontrollable.  The cops had to be called, as the situation rose to an alarming level.  Unfortunately the kids learned a lot that day on how to treat a ref, and how to use the "F" bomb.  The feelings felt inside our children, when witnessing these actions, can lead to a loss of love for the game.  Here is a video about parents misbehaving.

And lastly, in a fifth grade basketball league last year, a referee was punched, and two parents fought each other, in separate games, on the same day.  This has led to coaches having to take sportsmanship training, and holding parent meetings on how to behave.

Here are some suggestions, that may help every parent as they watch a game.  Do not allow winning, to overshadow the growth that is taking place in your child.  Being positive to your child and others, brings about good feelings and a desire to be better.  A good percentage of positives to negatives is ten positives, to one negative.  As hard as it may be to grasp, positive encouragement is what leads to motivation, and ultimately success.

Most children are not destined to major league success, or even junior high success.  By keeping this in mind you can help your child find his/her talents, without pushing your desires upon them.

Having the abundance mentality, versus the scarcity mentality, leads to a "win all" for everyone.  With the abundance mentality in play, you will cheer even the opposing team.  You will want everyone to achieve their goals.  And in the end this will only help your child.  On the other hand, those that have the scarcity mentality, secretly hope that everyone will fail but their own.  This mentality has it roots embedded in envy, jealousy,  and even hatred toward others.

Sports allows your child to grow in ways they otherwise couldn't.  Discipline, motivation, consistency, team work, a sense of accomplishment and worth, can all be obtained on the playing field.  It is essential that we as spectators, allow these attributes to build inside our children, without interfering.  True sportsmanship will allow these attributes to grow, and develop.  In the end your child will become polished like a rough stone, and will be ready to take care of his/her own family.

The Golf Weekend

We have some great friends that invited us to join them golfing over the weekend. I jumped all over that for the sheer excitement of driving the cart. You see, my husband and I haven't golfed together in over ten years due to the painful experience that is still vividly in our memories of the last time we attempted to golf together thinking it would be a "fun" date. Boy were we wrong. Without going into too much detail lets just say we nearly divorced over the golf outing. So naturally I vowed to never golf again with my husband in order to keep the marriage in good standing. But I never said I couldn't drive a golf cart. Hence, here we are ten years the wiser and I'm sure things can't go that bad twice. We  accept the kind offer and joined our friends at Hobble Creek Golf Course. It was breathtaking with the fall colors and a slight autumn chill in the air. This helped me overlook the $8 charge for me to simply ride in the cart with no plans to swing a club. I like to consider myself the social golfer. So much so that I found my stereotype in this hilarious golf video which portrays all the different types of golfers out there. I would be considered the "Tee Box Talker."  I don't do it intentionally but I fail to recognize that the silence which occurs on the tee box isn't considered a lull in the conversation that needs to be filled with chatter.  Rather it is golf etiquette to remain hushed so that the golfer tee-ing off can concentrate on their swing. Now that I recognize my golfing faults I can better apply the proper behavior that is expected. Unless, of course I use it to my advantage to gain the upper hand with the scores by intentionally distracting the other golfers in the moments it matters the most. Hmm...I see this as an opportunity not a fault.  Regardless of your golf stereotype Here is a link of great golf products that will get you more excited to play the sport of golf.  We did have a wonderful time with our friends and I'm happy to report that the marriage is still on!

Volleyball Tournament

I stumbled upon a purchased volleyball in my husbands vehicle a few days ago. I was surprised to see it there still in its box, inside the retail shopping bag. When I inquired about it, he told me that he has entered into a volleyball tournament with a buddy of his. Even with the shocked look on my face he still managed to ask me for a favor... "will you pepper with me for practice?" It has been years since he has played volleyball but he claims that it will be just like "riding a bike."  Let's hope so for his sake. I can't resist any invitation to play volleyball in any form, so I agree to help him dust off the cobwebs of the former volleyball athlete.  Well, lets just say that there is another layer of dust that has accrued because we have yet to find time to practice and the tournament is this weekend. I'm hoping for the best, but can't help wondering if it may turn out like This.........
No matter what happens at least the team will look good in their volleyball attire. There is a great selection of volleyball jerseys HERE. You will find style, affordability, and quality like none other.
Good luck to my husband on the upcoming tournament. May your teammate be as good as Keri Walsh!

DOMINATOR basketball hoop

Last week I was able to tour the DOMINATOR basketball hoop facility.  I was blown away, by the product and the people.  First a few things about the Dominator basketball hoop.  It is awesome, the best hoop ever invented.  The Doman brothers stepped outside of the box on this one.

Most basketball hoops out there, adjust their rims on a single pivot point.  Thus all of the weight, gets put on that pivot point bolt, and overtime it wears down.
The DOMINATOR adjusts telescopically up and down.  The whole vertical pole moves.  Because of this the weight is shared, and adjusting the rim is done quickly and easily in just 7 turns.  The baskeball hoop is made from aluminum instead of steel.  Aluminum is lighter weight, strong, and doesn't rust.  And the look is very sleek.
This hoop is made in American, using the American working people (Tommy Boy).  It was awesome to see that the Doman brothers are keeping this product production - here in America.  The truly care about making the best hoop, at an affordable price.  The parts are the best of the best, no expenses are spared.
Brandon Doman is leading the charge on getting this hoop into every American home.  He has put aside a great football coaching career, to be home more with his family, and to put his energy into the DOMINATOR.
I wish everyone could see, touch, and play on this hoop.  http://www.fourthquartersports.com/products.php?product=Dominator-Basketball-Hoop-%252d-In-Ground-Outdoor-Basketball-Hoop-. The price is affordable, especially considering all that goes into this basketball hoop.
This basketball outdoor/indoor hoop ships in just four parts.  It is so easy to install, a monkey could do it.  And that is one of the great emphasis behind the Dominator hoop, is to make the install a snap.

Read and React Offense

Oh my goodness, I finally found what I was looking for.  3 years after starting our basketball team, I came across an offense that is so unbelievable I couldn't believe my eyes.  Finally an offense that has a couple of rules, that lead to constant movement, and is unscoutable.  And though our team is only in 5th grade, we have been scouted before, believe it or not.  http://www.betterbasketball.com/, is the website of this offense. At first I tried to get this offense off of youtube, but to no avail.  So I approached our team and we all pitched in the $180 it took to buy this great DVD.
This is what is great about this offense.  It comes in 20 levels, 1-20.  Level one through 5 can be taught and learned effectively by 3rd graders.  In those first 5 levels your team will learn 5 or 6 rules, that train them to read and react to the ball.  This creates constant movement, cutters, spacing, and synergy.  It truly is unbelievable.  Now you might ask, why am I telling this to a possible opponent?  I really don't know, but I believe that the more we all can learn, the better.
Now this offense can't be learned in one day.  But the great news is, its the only offense you will need against any defense.  Because of the movement it is perfect against a man defense, but it comes in just as handy against a zone.  Players are hard to keep an eye on, and with its unpredictability, someone is always open.  Your practice sessions will incorporate the read and react into almost all drills, skeleton offense, and live 3,4,or 5 on 5 drills.  In warmups you will wow your opponent with your opening drills.  They look so coordinated and smooth.  Just today as we warmed up, the best team in our league was on their way home.  But they couldn't leave the gym as they just stared at our warm up routine.  And we did hear the words "wow this team is really good." It was all in the illusion.
Level one is learning to pass and cut, #2 post pass and cut, #3 dribble at, #4 circle movement dribble penetration, #5 basic post slides dribble penetration, #6 Baseline dribble penetration, #7 Pin and skip, #8 circle reverse, #9 post screens, #10 back screens, #11 multiple screens, #12 ball screens, #13 post pass and cut, #14 corners pass and cut, #15 power dribble, #16 advanced post slides, #17 transition offense, #18 press break, #19 full court trips, #20 flow.  Just incredible. Each level works with the next, and each level is just another building block.  By the time youre in High School you can master, as a team, all 20.
The basketball season will be coming up before you know it.  At Fourth Quarter Sports we are working hard on adding many products, to enable you to be fully ready.  http://www.fourthquartersports.com/products/basketball-reversible-jersey-youth-reversible-wicking-game-686.html is just one of our many jerseys.  All can be fully customized with fourthquartersporst.com.  Please stop by.  And youre welcome for the great advice.

The Online Store Experience

Its been about a month now since my last post. The delay is due to the amount of time it takes to start a web business, and to add products.  It is quite exciting though to have thousands of products at ones disposal.  My website Fourthquatersports.com, uses ZenCart for the shopping cart.  I was highly recommended this from my friend, but he is a cheap skate like myself.  ZenCart is free, but requires much work, and a high learning curve.  When a question arises though, the good news is most everything can be googled or investigated on youtube.  There have been days that I've given up on Zen Cart and was seconds away from switching to Big Commerce.  Big Commerce can cost a store anywhere from $39 to $179 a month, depending upon how many products you have.  However, seeing that I haven't made any money yet, I keep coming back to ZenCart.
It takes me anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes to get just one product posted.  Im up to 100 now, a huge milestone.  Here are some products. http://fourthquartersports.com/gym-duffel-bags-c-19_38/gym-bagogio-big-dome-duffel-bag-p-17. I'm a huge fan of <h3>Ogio bags</h3>.  They are heavy duty and last a long time.  My boy keeps asking me "why do you like <h3>OGIO duffle bags</h3> so much? Lets move on, and get some other products up."  Or check out some <h3>hoodies and warmups</h3> that we sell. http://fourthquartersports.com/hoodies-c-2_63_83/hoodie-heavyweight-color-block-sweatshirt-adult-and-youth-5250-p-97http://fourthquartersports.com/warmups-c-2_63_82/warmups-drive-pullover-3720-p-101

Having an online store is quite fun.  At times I want to quit, do the the amount of time required, but I keep plugging away.  Fortunately I have a job, so I don't have the stress of having to make money, but within the next year fourthquartersports should have 1500 products available ranging from <h3>team uniforms, athletic warmups, and apparel, and all sorts of sporting and outdoor gear</h3>.  By the way the Lehi Heat is on a 9 game winning streak.  Its all due to the offense called the <h3>read and react</h3>http://betterbasketball.com/read-react-offense/?gclid=CPiUnPL2-rYCFYZaMgodQ1UAjA.  Check it out, its really hard to stop, and keeps the kids moving.

How to start an online store

This title may be a little misleading, due to the fact that my experience is limited in starting an online store.  But I wanted to share what I know so far, though my earnings have been slim.  I've decided to start a sporting goods store www.fourthquartersports.com.  If you were to click on this link you would see that the website is still under construction, due to the complexity of installing zen-cart for a beginner.  It will wear you out, but its free, so I press on.
The number one priority in setting up an online store is finding a domain name.  I used www.netfirms.com, I like them better then Go-Daddy because they are more conservative in their values.  Once that is complete, I used hostgator.com to be my website server.  I also created a logo on www.logogarden.com.  That logo won't compete against Nike or Fedex (with the subliminal arrow) but its not bad for a beginner.  So far I'm out about $75, and feeling pretty good about things.  That is great compared to starting a brick and mortar retail store.  But reality set in as I realized that there is a great deal of competition in the sporting goods arena.  Never-the-less I have decided to plug along.
When I returned home from being out of town, I started to set up my business in Utah.  This was a bit tricky as you need to accomplish several things, and it has to be in order.  First I went on the Utah.gov website https://secure.utah.gov/osbr-user/user/welcome.html.  This is the go to website and answers many questions. I called them to make sure that my business name Fourth Quarter Sports was still available, and to my joy it was.  Next I contacted the IRS to get my employer identification number.  You'll need this as you set up your business.  Back on the secure utah website I did the one stop online business registration.  This took care of my LLC, (which is important for protection), my business name, and it generated a utah sales and use tax number.  I took all of this imformation down to the utah state tax commission 210 N 1950 W, slc, utah.  Everything was finalized there, and I was able to get my customer tax id number so I could set up shop with vendors.
With all this in hand I started searching the web for "setting up vendor accounts for sporting goods".  I looked for those that would drop ship my products right to the customer.  This alleviates stocking up items at home.  There are many companies that are happy to do this, but your margins become thinner.  I was surprised to link up with several wholesalers, even while my website was still under construction.  While I have great hope that my business will do well, worst case scenerio is I'll have some products for family, friends, and my team, at wholesale prices.  I've also starting learning my way around computers, and the science of SEO strategies for Google, bing, and yahoo.
Now I'm off to the hardest part yet for a beginner like me; installing zen-cart.  While there are many good shopping carts out there, I'm whats called (a tight wad), so I'm going with the free, super complex shopping cart system (Zen Cart).  I am super excited to be selling great sporting good products, and apparel such as Nike, Ogio, Port Authority, Sport-Tek, Russell athletic, active wear, outer wear, and the list will continue to get bigger.  Please stop by www.fourthquartersports.com, and like us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fourth-Quarter-Sports/168308039985288, and follow us on twitter https://twitter.com/fourthquarters/lists.  Oh and again if you know of a 6 foot 5th grader, with great basketball skills, living in the Lehi, Utah area, let me know.  We are thinking of putting together a traveling team, that travels exclusively to Montana and back.

The real world of Recreation sports

I am a coach of an 11 year old competitive basketball team.  We have been together for 3 years now.  We've practiced once or twice a week for three years, and had games once or twice a week.  They have improved dramatically, but so has the competition.  Through teaching I believe that we grow more than we ever could otherwise.
Now for the reason that I write this post.  Over the past year, I've done several one on one tryouts. Each time I'm quite excited to see who's coming, because according to their parents, their son is the next Michael Jordan.  They tell me in their email that their son is tall, very athletic, a great shooter, learner, listener, and so on.  But they never even come close to measuring up.  Little do their parents know just how good these kids get, playing competitive basketball over several years, compared to recreational ball.
All of these kids that I've watched in tryouts, have only played recreation basketball.  While some of this is good, I believe it handicaps them.  In our recreational league they are forced to wear a colored wrist band, and guard only the opposing player with the same color.  You can not steal the ball, but you can walk all over the court, and never hear the whistle being blown.  I remember a player picking up a ball and running all over the court.  Are you kidding me.  And I'm not a yeller, but I will admit I was getting irritated.  All of this to slowly help them, and be as fair as possible (everyone gets a trophy).  But in the end the opposite occurs.
We have taken the same boys, in the same grade and put them into competitive ball.  They are forced to learn the rules and abide by them.  They must learn how to protect the basketball while dribbling, and passing, otherwise a turnover will occur.  And they have to learn how to break a press, keep their head up while dribbling, and work on the fundamentals of the game.  In this manner, these kids grow by leaps and bounds.
Now back to the latest tryout.  Micheal Jordan was suppose to show up.  I was excited as we were needing a big, polished player.  And according to his mother he was just the man for the job. In his first layup attempt, he dribbled down the court with his head down, he launched from just inside the free throw line, and almost missed the backboard.  No problem I said to myself, lets give him another shot.  His mother had told me that he was a great three point shooter.  So I tested his shot.  The shot was a two handed shot, starting under the left hip.  During his windup, it appeared he almost did the letter "O" with the ball.  His release was under his chin, both hands crossing each other, and then quickly falling to the floor.  We kept shooting so I could bring out the good three point shooting in him, but to no avail.  I was absolutely astonished.  So we did some more drills so it looked like I was taking a hard look at him, and then it was time to face the mother.
I told her that I could see some good things in him, but there was no way I could put him on the floor against these veteran players.  They would eat his lunch, and send him crying home.  I recommended that he really work on the fundamentals.  I gave her a homework basketball sheet, and told her to consistently do it, 3-4 times a week.  She was saddened, and just like any good mother she tried her best to sell him.  Luckily afterwards she told me that she teaches dance, and she understands the different levels.  I told her that her son could come and work with us to try and get better, and after a while we could try and get him on somebody's team.
In summary, I applaud all the mothers that think their boy is the best.  But I have learned not to get my hopes up too much.  If your boy is almost 6 feet tall and is in fifth grade give me a call.  We'd love to have him on our team.  Recreation basketball is good at times, but very damaging as well to those that want to move on.  But in the end, those that are most consistent in all that they do, will win out.  If you want to give you boy or girl the edge in any sport visit http://www.fourthquartersports.com.  Soon this store will have many different tools for improving ones game.

Sports

My name is Nate Watson.  I have several passions and pastimes, but the one I want to talk about today is sports.  I grew up playing every sport, and later on in my youth I focused solely on basketball. And now today, as a father of 6 children, I coach a couple of teams.  Most likely, my children will not go onto to fame, and their careers will end in Jr. High or High school,  But I have learned that sports is a great vehicle to help raise children.
Dedication, teamwork, hustle, hard work, perseverance, ect. are just some of the principles taught on the court.  After coaching for several years I have learned that the fundamentals must be taught and learned.  And to be a special team, the kids must play as a unit.  Thus, one learns the basics over and over, and becomes an unselfish team player.
Because I have many kids, and a passion for sports, I have decided to open an online store.  I choose for my name www.fourthquartersports.com. To my surprise, this name had not been taken.  The fourth quarter is where all the hard work pays off, where ones mental game must be sharp, so as to never give up, and to always have a supreme confidence in themselves and their teammates.  My  hope is to make sports a bit more affordable for everyone, especially those parents with multiple children, who are all eating into the family budget.  My goal overtime is to have thousands of sporting apparel, and goods available at great prices.
